Since the beginning of the twentieth century, when it was first used at a spa in Ostend, Belgium, chlorine dioxide has been known as a powerful disinfectant of water.

One of the most important physical properties of chlorine dioxide is its high solubility in water, particularly in chilled water. In contrast to the hydrolysis of chlorine gas in water, chlorine dioxide in water does not hydrolyze to any appreciable extent but remains in solution as a dissolved gas (Aieta and Berg, 1986). It is approximately 10 times more soluble than chlorine.

Engineer Learning Objectives:

  • Get introduced with Chlorine as a disinfectant in water treatment.
  • Learn to understand CT disinfection credit
  • Understand its role as a pre-oxidant to control tastes and odor
  • Identify control of iron and manganese
  • Describe control of hydrogen sulfide and phenolic compounds
  • Highlight the proper use of Chlorine Dioxide as a Pre-oxidant
  • Uphold the proper condition of application of this chemical
  • Identify basic information about chlorine chemistry in water treatment
  • Enumerate trends in Chlorine Dioxide Byproduct Control and their health effects
  • Describe disinfection parameters and inactivation of microorganisms in water system
  • Instructed about relevant health impact
  • Learn about inactivation mechanisms, points of application and efficiencies of Chlorine Dioxide as a disinfectant.
  • Enable to better express and illustrate the chlorine chemistry in water treatment
  • Learn the standard procedure to proper utilization of this Chlorine utilization
  • Learn to summarize the evolution and current Chlorine Dioxide disinfection practices in the United States

This is a handout style continuing education PDH class that comprehensively reviews the publication.
